Russell,
I am the Interoperability Test Coordinator for the Avaya Interchange
product. Sorry for the late response - I was on vacation for the last
two weeks.
I have set up and used a MS Exchange 2000 server with VPIM and sent and
received messages to/from various voice mail system via the Avaya
Interchange 5.4 system (which is now Generally Available as of today -
January 7). Previous versions of Interchange do not support the VPIM
protocol.
I am curious as to what extent you want to use the MS Exchange 2000
server with VPIM. It does have some nuances that I explain below.
Also, do you have the Avaya Unified Messenger product that uses MS
Exchange 2000 as a platform? If so, it does not support the VPIM
protocol.
During our testing we noticed a few nuances with VPIM on MS Exchange
2000 that you should be aware of:
1. Every message sent must have "VPIM=" in front of every recipient's
address.
2. A reply message resets "VPIM=" to lower case and therefore must be
reset to uppercase if the message is to be replied to.
3. Text-only or fax-only messages get bounced back - they must have a
voice attachment.
4. Voice messages always have a text component, which is the ASCII name
of the sender.
Setting up the MS Exchange 2000 server for VPIM was not an obvious task.
I found only a couple of references to VPIM on the Microsoft web site
and they didn't provide enough detail as to what I needed to administer
so I called the VPIM rep. at Microsoft and got the information.
Anyway, here are the instructions to set up VPIM on MS Exchange 2000:
1. Install ADSIEdit utility:
A. Copy the adsiedit.dll file from the C:\Program Files\Support
Tools folder to the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder.
B. At a command prompt, change directory to
%SystemRoot%\System32.
C. Type the following commmand:
regsvr32 adsiedit.dll
D. Click Start, click Run, type MMC and then click OK.
E. On the Console menu, click Add/Remove Snap-in.
F. Click Add, select ADSI Edit, click Add, click Close, and then
click OK.
G. To use adsiedit: In the MMC Console Root, ADSI Edit window
select ADSI Edit. It may also be available by clicking Start, Programs,
Windows 2000 Support Tools, Tools, ADSI Edit.
2. Administer the 2 VPIM variables within the ADSI Edit window:
A. Select the Configuration Container
B. Select Configuration
C. Select Services
D. Select Microsoft Exchange
E. Select (name of First Organization)
F. Select Administrative Groups
G. Select First Administrative Group
H. Select Servers
I. Right click on the MS Exchange 2000 server name and select
Properties
J. Cursor to the "Select a property to view" box and then scroll
to the msExchVPIMConvertInbound and change the the "Value(s):" box to
TRUE.
K. Scroll to the msExchVPIMConvertOutbound and change the the
"Value(s):" box to TRUE.
L. Close the ADSI Edit window
3. Install Outlook 2000 Extensions to Enable Voice recording and playing
within Outlook.
A. Open Internet Explorer and point to:
http://MachineName/Exchweb/Bin/Emsetup.asp
where MachineName is the name of the MS Exchange 2000
Server.
B. Follow the instructions found there.
4. Open Outlook and create a new message. The Record button should now
appear on the menu bar. When you receive a voice message into an
Exchange server mailbox, then you will need to double click on the
message title to completely open the message and then you will be able
to play the voice message.
This will allow you to send and receive messages to and from the
Exchange 2000 server with another VPIM capable voice mail system. You
would need to upgrade your Interchange to release 5.4 to get VPIM
capability and then administer the Interchange with the Exchange Server
information to send messages to other voice mail systems that do not
have VPIM capabilities.
Please let me know if you have questions or problems with the above
process.

Subject: [VPIM] VPIM, Exchange 2000 and Avaya's Intuity Interchange
Team:
I am looking helpful documentation and real user experience with
integrating
VPIM on Exchange 2000.
Our ultimate goal is have a VPIM exchange be another node on our Intuity
Interchange box.
Any real mailbox not on the Intuity Interchange would be added as a
mailbox
on the exchange "node".
Voicemail's would end up in the user's inbox (or whatever you want to
call
it).
Need some pointers and helpful documentation.
Thanks,
Russell Ashton
