SNAP draft - a few open issues

Hi all,

For those of you who can't recall, SNAP - Simple Notification and Alarm
Protocol, was issued as a draft just before the last IETF meeting.
It can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-shapira-snap-01.txt.

The next draft is being worked on according to a few action items given in
the last IETF meeting and some remarks I got on this mailing list.

A few open issues are still open as far as I am concerned - and I would be
happy if I get some comments/ideas.

One of the bigger issues is the issue of the SNAP data format. As you can
recall, the SNAP passes different attributes on the event occurring in the
messaging server. In the beginning we had only field=value pairs (e.g.
subject=ABC) for the data passed using the query string. Later on I was
commented that it would be better to give the XML format (as it has more
expressive opportunities, it has more tools widely spread over the net,
etc.). The decision taken in the last draft was to give the XML and the
field=value format as well. In the last IETF meeting I was commented (and I
agree..) that two formats is problematic and tedious. After talking with
some of you personally, I got some comments that it would be better to use
the standard Internet Message Format (2822) - as on the email server side it
will be much easier to develop and there is no real advantage with XML in
our case (SNAP). Any thoughts? I my self am in favor of the "field=value&.."
as it has been sufficient for us and easy to implement over the standard
HTTP protocol.

Another issue is the time format. As far as I can see it there are two main
stream time formats today. One is the ISO8601 and the other is the one used
in 2822. Currently the SNAP uses neither. I think that it should use the
2822 standard (for the same reasons given in the last paragraph). Any
objections?

There are a few other open issues that I will bring up in the next few days
(I need to work on them more). If there are any comments on other things in
the SNAP I will be most thankful!.

Thanks

Noam Shapira.
