This was worked by the VMUIF and standardized as ISO/IEC 13714 in the
early-90's. Some systems offer the option to use either a vendor specific
UI or this standard.

The goal was to facilitate networking between voice mail systems using
Internet Mail. An alternative, if you will, to AMIS. There was no intent
to describe or define access.

Access to voice mail servers has traditionally been through a proprietary
API. Typically those APIs are not published. Recent work in the VPIM WG is
focusing on enhancing IMAP for access to the VM store. Some newer voice
mail systems (e.g., Nortel CallPilot) support IMAP access.
