Although goals/objectives can change over time, I believe the intent of the
original goals document probably still apply to the current work group
objectives. The document itself is probably outdated...
One primary goal is to provide end users a consistent level of messaging
services independent of media type, and independent of originator and
recipient messaging server/client. This includes the ability to send any
content maximizing the the chance of message delivery/rendering with
assurance of consistent notifications. These services should allow the
originator the greatest control over the selection of content criticality
and notification services, and the recipient ability to control content
preferences.
First, this goal and the associated requirements apply to 1) telephony,
desktop, and "XYZ" clients, and 2) existing and future messaging services
and systems (e.g. VPIM, email, etc). Also, the message
exchange/notification/control would apply to any media type.
Another related primary goal would provide end users "capabilities"
information associated with target recipients in order to achieve a higher
quality and level of service. This would maximize the number of successful
deliveries and minimize the number of notifications. Again, this goal
applies to existing messaging services and systems.
The intent of this email is not to breakdown into the specific technical
issues and functional components, but to "revisit" the user service goals to
help guide and benefit subsequent discussions.

Subject: VPIM v3 / IVM Goals
Folks,
Time is getting on and we seem to be lost in the details. Before we show up
for our VPIM meeting at the 47th IETF in Adelaide, I think we need to have a
clearer picture of what folks think are the goals for what we are trying to
do here. Specifically, I am talking about the VPIM v3 / Internet Voice Mail
effort.
We have a VPIM v3 Goals document <draft-ema-vpimv3-goals-00.txt> that is
outdated. We received some good comments on that (privately), but our
author Laile has not yet produced a revision. We also have three different
versions of the VPIM v3 / IVM protocol which take different approaches to
the problem -- some would say to different problems...
So I would like us to step back for a bit and suggest what we believe the
goals of the VPIM v3 effort are. For example, are we looking to provide a
ubiquitous client interworking or is that a local server issue. This is
essentially a checkpoint to ensure that we indeed do agree on what problem
we are trying to solve. We certainly want to avoid trying to solve all the
problems.
I encourage you to send you views on our goals to the IETF VPIM list. You
can start from scratch or use the original Goals document as a target.
I would suggest that we would start off the VPIM v3 discussion at the
Adelaide meeting with a confirmation of these goals.
Cheers,
Glenn.
