Folks,

Here are some brief notes from the pre-meeting discussion we had yesterday:

VPIM pre-meeting
Dec 12, 2000 - 1-3pm

3GPP
Ileana Leuca
* Gave an overview of 3GPP & MMS ‹ will provide a copy of her slides
* Noted that many of the features of the Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS)
are still under discussion
* MMS will be deployed soon for 2.5G even though the design is for 3G
* They would like feedback by April from on:
> * minimum set of audio codecs (currently AMR/EFR, MP3, MIDI, WAV)
> * protocols for terminal capability reporting
*
* Discussed rational for codec choice
> * What bit rates of MP3? Unknown.
> * MIDI & WAV are not codecs! Which WAV codecs? The web ones... MIDI is for
> new ring tones.
*
* Discussed protocol options (Rescap, Conneg, CCPP, SDP, ...) Action: VPIM
WG to draft a response to 3GPP-T2-WG3

SIP UM
Henning Schluzrinne
* Gave a quick overview on this research project. Presentation is available
at: http://www.cs.columbia.edu/~hgs/papers/Sing0009_Unified.ppt
* Essentially accessing voice mail store with SIP & RTSP instead of IMAP
(since IMAP has no flow control, streaming or reliable disconnected mode).
Notifications of new messages are sent as emails with URLs.
* A major issue noted is that there if the notification message is deleted,
the message is not. This will get confusing with email as message and
notification

Message Context
Eric Burger
* This is the Œintent of the senderı and replaces primary content
* Graham found some issues
* Unsure how to do IANA registrations

Critical Content
Eric Burger
* Several issues raised based on trying to understand how this will work
through gateways (e.g., should make the next hop make the decisions, can
this be done with an ESMTP extension)
* Take discussion offline and report back on FridayŠ

VPIM Directory
Greg Vaudreuil
* Current VPIM use of ENUM draft is harmonized with ENUM
* Considerable comments on the VPIM schema document that are mostly cleanup

IMAP Extensions
Lyndon Nerenberg
* Binary for IMAP -- Drivers for this extension is binary upload & download.
Will also indicate file lengths
* Out of band downloads a CHANNEL extension will allow adding an extra
parameter to add a SIP/RTSP URL to indicate the out of band channel for
playing a voice message.
* What about requesting an alternate codec? This would be best done with
CHANNEL, i.e., outside of IMAP
* Take discussion offline and report back on FridayŠ

Unlisted Numbers
* There is a need to reply to a private/unlisted voice mail (VPIM) address.
> * In the phone network, the callers number is propagated to all the systems,
> just not to the called phone. This works because the network is trusted.
> * Treat inside and outside the trusted network the same?
> * Use an anonymous re-mailer, like in Verizonıs network?
*
* Suggested that Greg Vaudreuil write up a proposal for this that could
become a BCP on how to do this.

Codecs
* After some discussion, noting that the reasons for picking MS-GSM were not
as compelling as they used to be, the room felt that mu-law G.711 should be
the baseline codec for IVM.
* There was an unanswered question as to if audio/basic would work on
browsers? That is should we pick audio/basic or audio/wav as the content
type?
